An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Restore the FCC's Gigabit Broadband Speed Goal

14 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

The FCC just killed America's gigabit broadband goal, and you need to push back on it. On August 14, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr finalized the elimination of the 1Gbps/500Mbps long-term speed target set in 2024, declaring current deployment levels "acceptable." Fiber networks have offered gigabit speeds for years. Scrapping the goal doesn't reflect technological reality — it protects slower, inferior technologies from having to compete. The FCC's own reasoning gives it away. The agency cited comments from cable lobby group NCTA and wireless lobby group CTIA as justification, and previously flagged that the gigabit goal was "prejudicial" to satellite providers like Starlink. That's not neutrality — that's regulatory cover for companies that don't want to upgrade their networks. Abandoning a speed benchmark because some providers can't meet it is like lowering the bar instead of training harder. Demand that the FCC restore the gigabit speed goal. American families and businesses deserve a federal agency that sets ambitious standards, not one that codifies mediocrity to protect industry incumbents.
