I am writing to express my appreciation for your recent acknowledgment that President Trump violated the law in his abrupt firings of inspectors general. While I have not agreed with you on many issues, I respect and commend your willingness to publicly state what many other elected officials have chosen to ignore.
The role of inspectors general is critical in ensuring accountability and preventing waste, fraud, and abuse within our government. Your defense of these positions, rooted in principles established after Watergate, is an important reminder of the necessity of oversight. The law clearly mandates that Congress must be given 30 days’ notice before an inspector general is removed, and the administration’s failure to adhere to this requirement is deeply troubling.
The dismissal of the USAID inspector general without proper notification, particularly after his office reported significant mismanagement of nearly half a billion dollars in food assistance, raises serious concerns about the integrity of our institutions. The broader pattern of removing 18 inspectors general across federal agencies without sufficient justification further underscores the need for vigilance in protecting the rule of law.
I encourage you to continue standing for the Constitution and the rule of law in the days ahead. Your leadership in demanding transparency and accountability in government is more important than ever. Upholding these principles should be a bipartisan effort, and I hope you will persist in ensuring that no administration—regardless of party—operates above the law.
Thank you for your commitment to oversight and accountability. I urge you to remain steadfast in defending the institutions that uphold our democracy, and I look forward to seeing your continued efforts in this regard.
