Protect *Obergefell*. Not a plea, but a justified demand.
We, the undersigned, write to you as citizens committed to the promise of liberty and equal protection under the law. The petition now before you — seeking to overturn *Obergefell v. Hodges* — is not merely an attack on the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans. It is an attack on the very foundation of constitutional protections for all people in this nation.
In 2015, this Court recognized that the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees same-sex couples the fundamental right to marry, affirming that our Constitution does not permit the government to deny any group the dignity, autonomy, and legal protections afforded to others. That ruling did not create a “special right” — it recognized an existing one, rooted in equal protection, due process, and human dignity.
That decision placed the United States firmly on the side of equal justice — a principle that should never be subject to political winds or personal ideology. The role of the Court is to safeguard rights for all people, not to revisit and revoke them when politics shift.
Protect *Obergefell*. Protect the dignity, security, and equality of every American.
If the Supreme Court refuses to safeguard marriage equality, we will fight for it in every arena — in legislatures, at the ballot box, and in the courts. We will organize, legislate, and litigate until marriage equality is beyond the reach of political tides or judicial overreach. Stop listening to the voice that seeks to divide; start listening to the people whose lives and freedoms you are sworn to protect.
