I am writing to urge you to support the immediate removal of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem following the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens during Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis. Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good were killed by federal agents in what should have been routine immigration enforcement operations, and the circumstances surrounding both deaths raise serious questions about accountability and the use of force.
After Alex Pretti's death, Secretary Noem claimed he approached Border Patrol agents with a handgun and "violently resisted" when officers tried to disarm him. However, eyewitness videos do not appear to show Pretti holding a gun in the moments before his death, and local officials confirmed he had a permit to carry a gun. Similarly, after Renee Nicole Good's death, Noem claimed Good tried to "kill or to cause bodily harm to agents, an act of domestic terrorism," but cellphone videos cast doubt on this explanation, with witnesses saying they believed Good was trying to drive away from officers.
Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi stated that "The House must immediately take steps to impeach Kristi Noem," and 120 members of Congress have now co-sponsored Rep. Robin Kelly's impeachment resolution. Senators Michael Bennet, Peter Welch, and Jacky Rosen, along with Governors Kathy Hochul and Gavin Newsom, have called for her resignation.
The deployment of thousands of federal officers to Minnesota has resulted in what lawmakers are characterizing as "a paramilitary force terrorizing American communities." When federal agents kill U.S. citizens and the Secretary provides explanations contradicted by video evidence, we have a crisis of accountability that demands immediate action.
I urge you to support efforts to remove Secretary Noem from office, whether through impeachment proceedings or by calling for her resignation. The deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good demand accountability at the highest levels of the Department of Homeland Security.
