I’m writing as your constituent to urge you to oppose the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act when it comes before the Senate for a vote.
While I strongly support the integrity of our elections, the SAVE Act does not solve a real problem—it creates one. The legislation seeks to block non-citizens from voting, an act that is already illegal and exceedingly rare. What the bill actually does is create new, unnecessary barriers to voting for millions of Americans—especially women who have changed their names due to marriage, as well as transgender individuals and naturalized citizens whose documents may not perfectly align.
The requirement for in-person presentation of citizenship documents such as a passport or birth certificate during voter registration or updates disproportionately impacts married women and other groups. Many Americans—especially those from historically marginalized communities—do not have immediate access to these documents. According to voting rights groups, over 69 million women and 4 million men do not have a birth certificate that reflects their current legal name. This legislation would effectively disenfranchise them.
Additionally, the SAVE Act could eliminate online, mail-in, and third-party registration efforts, which are critical tools for civic engagement, particularly in underserved communities. It would also place more burden on local election workers—many of whom are women—at a time when they are already stretched thin and dealing with ongoing threats and disinformation.
Our democracy depends on removing barriers to participation, not creating new ones. Please stand up for the rights of all eligible voters and vote NO on the SAVE Act.
Thank you for your time and your service.
