Oppose U.S. Funding for Argentina's Repressive Regime

I am writing to express my deep concern about the current situation in Argentina under President Javier Milei's government and to urge you to oppose any U.S. funding or support for this increasingly authoritarian regime.
Since taking office in December 2023, Milei's administration has implemented severe economic measures while simultaneously eroding civil liberties and democratic norms. The government has introduced harsh fiscal austerity, including closing ministries, mass layoffs of public employees, and drastic cuts to social assistance programs. These actions alone are cause for alarm, but what's even more troubling is the accompanying crackdown on civic freedoms and the right to protest.
The introduction of the 'Bullrich protocol' effectively criminalizes peaceful demonstrations by allowing security forces to intervene in any protest that blocks streets or roads. This is a clear violation of the fundamental right to assembly and free expression. Furthermore, provincial reforms, particularly in Jujuy, have increased fines for misdemeanors and further restricted the ability of citizens to voice their concerns.
Of particular concern is the creation of a Unified Command for Productive Security, which coordinates security forces to protect economic interests from protests. This measure disproportionately affects indigenous and peasant communities defending their lands against extractive industries, which are being incentivized through the new Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI).
These policies are not just economic reforms; they represent a systematic dismantling of democratic safeguards and human rights protections. By restricting channels of citizen participation, the Milei government is leaving its people with fewer tools to assert their rights and resist unjust policies.
I strongly urge you to take a stand against these antidemocratic measures. The United States must not provide financial support or legitimacy to a government that is actively suppressing its citizens' rights. Please work to ensure that no American tax dollars are used to fund or support Argentina's current regime. Instead, I ask that you advocate for conditioning any U.S. engagement with Argentina on the full restoration of civic freedoms and the protection of human rights.
The defense of democracy and human rights must be at the forefront of our foreign policy. By taking action on this issue, you can help protect the Argentine people's right to protest and resist economic and political models that consolidate new forms of exclusion and injustice.
