An open letter to the U.S. Congress

No ankle monitors for immigrants.

The proposed bill mandating GPS tracking for all non-detained immigrants in the United States raises significant civil liberties concerns. Subjecting asylum seekers, students, and other non-criminal immigrants to constant surveillance through electronic monitoring devices is an extreme overreach that violates basic rights to privacy and freedom of movement. Such a policy echoes dark periods of discriminatory treatment and dehumanization in our nation's history that we should learn from, not repeat. While securing our borders is a legitimate government interest, indiscriminately treating all immigrants as threats to be tracked is antithetical to American values of human dignity, due process, and equal protection under the law. The exorbitant $11 billion allocation toward immigration enforcement displays misguided priorities that militarize our immigration system rather than enacting balanced, humane reforms reflecting our tradition as a nation of immigrants. I urge you to publicly oppose this draconian legislation that would needlessly criminalize and persecute vulnerable populations simply seeking refuge or opportunity in our country. We must chart a better path forward that upholds America's founding ideals of liberty and justice for all.
