An open letter to the U.S. Congress

TELL US AGAIN THE POINT OF YOU?

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

Do we need Congress anymore? SCOTUS continues to erode your power. They have now said the Trump administration can get rid of departments established by Congress. A power they once denied when Nixon tried it in 1973. The president, any president, can now disregard laws Congress has passed. Your congressional powers of lawmaking are done. And you continue to make yourselves powerless, and ultimately obsolete. The Senate is currently considering rescissions. A request from the WH for Congress to approve $9.4 billion in cuts it has made in spending that Congress approved. By law, a president can’t decide not to spend money Congress has appropriated. No one told the Trump administration, since they proceeded to do just that as soon as they took office. Passing this rescission request would put Congress’s stamp of approval on those cuts, even though they change what Congress originally agreed to. They have stated this is just the first of many such requests to come. And that if Congress won’t pass them, the administration will hold back funds under impoundment. Even though Congress explicitly outlawed that process in the 1974 Impoundment Control Act. “We still are lacking the level of detail that is needed to make the right decisions,” Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said. “It’s extremely unusual for any senator to not be able to get that kind of detailed information.” This is the kind of typically cowardly, pleading, weak, please lie to me rhetoric coming out of the GOP Congress these days. We’ll hear feeble protestations. A kabuki show of resistance, and then you’ll fold. And with your acquiescence another wall of democracy comes down. But no matter. While y’all re making your way to the unemployment line, the Frankenstein monster created and fed by GOP politics is coming for its maker. And seemingly won’t be controlled no matter how much it is spun. The villagers are coming with their torches and pitchforks. Yesterday all but one Republican House member voted against a Democratic measure to require the release of the Epstein files.
