Reject harmful redefinition, protect transgender students' rights

The proposal to legally define "sex" in a restrictive manner that disregards gender identity is misguided and harmful. Transgender students deserve to have their identities respected and be able to access restrooms and facilities that align with their lived gender. Schools should create an inclusive environment where all students feel safe and accepted. This bill undermines the 2019 Missouri Supreme Court decision upholding rights for transgender individuals. It would open the door to discrimination by codifying an arbitrary definition that flies in the face of medical consensus and human rights. Rather than protecting students, it would subject transgender youth to further marginalization at a vulnerable time in their lives. Policymakers should listen to the concerns of LGBTQ+ advocates, legal experts, and families who warn that this legislation will breed more conflict and litigation instead of resolving matters. Our schools must be welcoming spaces that nurture the wellbeing of every child. I urge you to reject this harmful attempt to redefine "sex" and uphold the dignity of Missouri's transgender students.
