I am writing today to urge you to strongly support the DEFIANCE act and to continue pushing for further restrictions on the ability of technology companies to make available services that harm society. I find the behavior of Elon Musk and x.AI in response to reports of Grok’s ability to create non-consensual sexual images to be obnoxious and reprehensible, not to mention fundamentally reckless. Unfortunately, there are no ways to create technological restrictions on AI’s ability to create harmful text, images, and video; the cat is out of the bag there. Our only recourse is to create robust legal restrictions that penalize this kind of unacceptable behavior.
