I support HR40 to initiate a commission to study and review proposals for reparations for African Americans. Enslaved Africans built this country while being terrorized by their enslavers. The very least we can do is pay their descendants for their ancestors’ labor, as their descendants were prevented from developing generational wealth from their ancestors’ contributions while also experiencing racist discrimination through legislation. Let’s show the American people that we care about equity and justice. This bill to start this commission is a first and very crucial step to begin this process of fully acknowledging and addressing systemic racism.
