An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Start Preparing Now. The Work Begins in January.

130 so far! Help us get to 250 signers!

Yesterday, voters gave Democrats control of the House and the Senate. That was a clear choice to change direction, not to go back to how things were. I'm asking you to start preparing now, so the new Congress can act on its first day. Four years can sound like a long time, but good government moves carefully, and careful work takes time. The new members take their seats in January. The bills, the hearings and the plans should be ready before they arrive. Specifically, I'm asking you to: 1- Draft the legislation now. Write the bills during the transition so they can be introduced as soon as the new Congress is seated. Protections that depend on executive orders or goodwill can disappear overnight, so put them into law. 2- Repair what was dismantled, and improve on it. Review every Project 2025 action taken in the last two years, item by item, and assign each one a bill, a committee or an oversight plan. Don't just restore what we had; build what we were promised. 3- Reverse the harm to families. Medicaid work requirements and six-month eligibility checks start January 1, 2027. They come alongside SNAP restrictions and administrative changes that make housing assistance harder to get and to keep. People will lose coverage over paperwork, not eligibility. Repeal these cuts and the burdensome requirements that hurt the most vulnerable, and explain plainly to the public where these harms came from. 4- Restore accountability. Use oversight in full: investigations, public hearings, subpoenas and, where warranted, impeachment. Release the Epstein files in full, whoever they name. No one is above the law. 5- Build a government that looks like the people it serves. Diversity, equity and inclusion are not liabilities. Hire, appoint and promote people who reflect the country, not the billionaires who fund campaigns. 6- Choose leadership that fits this moment. Voters asked for urgency, so support leaders in your caucus who will deliver it. Don't trade away core protections in the name of compromise. Work with anyone who will help, but don't give up civil rights, health care or the rule of law to get a deal. Voters did their part. Please be ready to do yours on day one.
