Enact Ranked Choice Voting to Strengthen Democracy

Ranked choice voting holds candidates accountable to a true majority instead of a mere plurality. This strengthens our democracy by incentivizing candidates to appeal broadly rather than run divisive campaigns targeting narrow bases. HR 4464 would require use of ranked choice voting for all House elections starting in 2022. This legislation shifts power to voters by allowing them to rank their preferences on one ballot, ensuring the winner has majority support from the community and making votes more empowering and meaningful. Ranked choice voting prevents vote-splitting between similar candidates and eliminates the spoiler effect, giving voters more choice. This system has been successfully used in Maine, Alaska, and over a dozen cities including New York City. It is crucial to implement ranked choice voting to uphold majority rule and empower voters.
