We want an ethical budget

The Paradox of American Wealth: A Nation of Riches, A People in Ruin The United States wears the crown of the world’s wealthiest nation, its economy a juggernaut, its billionaires counted in the hundreds. Yet, beneath the facade of financial dominance lies a disturbing contradiction: a country that can “afford” to funnel $4.5 trillion in tax breaks to the wealthiest individuals and corporations but cannot ensure that its citizens have access to basic human rights—housing, healthcare, and dignity. This paradox is not just a failure of policy but a moral catastrophe. The very people who built this nation, who labor in its factories, serve in its restaurants, teach in its schools, and care for its sick, are increasingly left behind, struggling to afford shelter and medical care. Meanwhile, the budget resolution that dictates the nation's priorities suggests that the only people worth investing in are those who least need the help. A Budget That Serves the Few While Gutting the Many The latest budget resolution further cements the government’s allegiance to the wealthy. A $4.5 trillion tax break for the richest, all while slashing funds from programs that provide food assistance, education, and healthcare. It is an obscene display of misplaced priorities, one that reveals a fundamental truth: in America, the government works for those who need it the least. Politicians justify these cuts under the guise of fiscal responsibility, yet they have no problem running deficits when it comes to military spending or corporate bailouts. The reality is simple—money exists, but it is not being used for the people. Instead, it is funneled into the hands of those who already hold power, widening the inequality gap to historic levels. A Call for Moral and Economic Realignment The issue at hand is not just economic but ethical. A country that prides itself on exceptionalism cannot allow its citizens to sleep on streets, suffer from treatable illnesses, or be forced into financial ruin simply for existing in a system designed to exploit them. This is not just bad policy; it is systemic cruelty. We must demand that our leaders shift the focus from corporate welfare to human welfare. That means investing in housing as a human right, implementing universal healthcare, and ensuring that the wealthiest contribute their fair share rather than hoarding resources at the expense of society. This is not radical—it is the bare minimum expectation of a functioning, just society. America is at a crossroads. We can continue down the path of wealth worship and human neglect, or we can demand a system that values people over profits. The richest nation in the world should not be one where suffering is a built-in feature of the economic model. It is time to reimagine what prosperity means, not just for the few but for all.
