Speed Cameras

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the implementation of speed cameras in our community. While I understand the importance of road safety, I am deeply concerned about the broader implications of automated surveillance systems, particularly regarding privacy rights and the potential for government overreach.
Speed cameras, by design, continuously monitor and record the movements of citizens, often without their knowledge or consent. This creates a troubling precedent for mass surveillance, where the government can track individuals’ locations and behaviors under the guise of public safety. Such systems risk normalizing constant monitoring, eroding the expectation of privacy in public spaces.
Moreover, the deployment of speed cameras often lacks sufficient oversight and transparency. There is a real danger that these systems could be expanded beyond traffic enforcement, used to collect data for unrelated purposes, or disproportionately target certain communities. Once the infrastructure for surveillance is in place, it becomes all too easy for its use to be broadened in ways that infringe on civil liberties.
