I’m writing to express deep concern about proposals that would enable the indefinite detention of immigrant families. While strong borders and rule of law are essential, detaining families—including children—for extended periods without clear timelines or adequate safeguards runs counter to core American values: limited government, individual dignity, and family unity.
Indefinite detention is not only costly and inefficient—it’s also deeply at odds with the principles of due process. Many of these families are lawfully seeking asylum through legal channels. Holding them indefinitely, often in overcrowded facilities with substandard conditions, is a poor reflection of our commitment to human rights and constitutional protections.
Moreover, this approach puts an undue burden on taxpayers. Detention is far more expensive than proven alternatives like family case management programs, which ensure compliance with immigration proceedings at a fraction of the cost—without sacrificing security or accountability.
America has always stood as a beacon of freedom, justice, and compassion. We can secure our borders and enforce our laws while still treating people—especially children—with basic decency. I urge you to oppose any legislation that would allow for the indefinite detention of immigrant families and instead support smart, humane policies that reflect the best of who we are as a nation.
Thank you for your service and leadership.
