I understand that half of this country is inspired by President Trump’s style of governance. As a literacy specialist, I also understand that MORE than half of this country operates at tier 3 (or lower) functional literacy. They believe what they are told and cannot deduce how what they are told can adversely affect them.
This administration claims that they will protect citizens by deporting undocumented persons guilty of violent crimes- which sounds fine on the surface. However, reports demonstrate that some of these people’s “violent crimes” involve moving violations, parking tickets, and unfounded accusations for which they were never convicted. A US citizen in Boston has received deportation orders based solely on the fact that she is an immigration lawyer. These are not felons. These are just people that old rich white men don’t like. There are no due process hearings- a direct violation of the constitution elected officials are legally bound to uphold.
Add to that the fact that HR1526 will provide them the right to completely ignore any and all judges in this country and proceed with anything and everything this administration feels like doing. They are already enforcing measures from Project 25. Women are losing rights to their bodies, opinions, and votes. Companies openly discriminate against people whose value they don’t recognize based on skin color, sexuality, or gender presentation. Innocent people are being deported to concentration camps. Tell me what comes next?
What the illiterate are hearing however, is that none of this will affect them. Every day we watch newly open-eyed Trump supporters crying on the news about how they never thought they’d lose their jobs, their social service benefits, their family members. And still, they don’t understand.
It is the JOB of elected officials to support and protect their constituents. It is YOUR JOB to vote against policies that will adversely affect not only those who voted for you, but also those who live within the parameters over which you abide. It is your JOB to read the US constitution and abide by the laws as they are written, and most importantly, it is YOUR JOB to vote against legislation that violates that inviolable piece of paper upon which all things American are based.
