I’m writing as your constituent to urge you to co-sponsor and push for passage of three vital bills that will help protect our democracy and civil liberties: the Visible Act, the No Masks for ICE Act, and the No Secret Police Act.
These measures are necessary to end a dangerous trend of unidentified and unaccountable federal agents operating in American communities.
Key Facts
• Federal agents in unmarked uniforms and vehicles were deployed in Portland, Oregon, and other U.S. cities in 2020 under the guise of protecting federal property. They detained protesters without identifying themselves, often violating constitutional rights (Source: AP News). Such actions continue today.
• The Visible Act would require all federal law enforcement officers to display identifying information (name or badge) and their agency when operating in public spaces.
• The No Masks for ICE Act prohibits Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from covering their faces during operations, ensuring accountability. Masking identities fosters fear, not safety, especially in immigrant communities already subject to over-policing.
• The No Secret Police Act, introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others, would ban the use of unmarked vehicles and unidentified officers in crowd control or law enforcement settings, upholding the First and Fourth Amendments (Source: Congress.gov).
Why This Matters
Letting government agents operate anonymously on U.S. soil erodes democratic norms and paves the way for authoritarian abuse. Transparency in law enforcement isn't just good practice, it’s the foundation of public trust.
This is not a partisan issue. It’s about the basic right of every American to know who is exerting force in their name.
Please be a champion for liberty and due process. I urge you to support these bills and help ensure they receive a fair hearing and vote.
Thank you for your leadership.
