The United States global leadership in innovation is in great jeopardy due to the current administration’s drastic cuts to funding for basic science research. Investment in fundamental research conducted at universities, national labs, and government agencies has been the driving force behind numerous groundbreaking inventions and technological advancements that have fueled economic growth and improved quality of life. It has also attracted the best and brightest from around the world to come to America to study and innovate. However, the administration’s draconian budget proposals and deliberate under funding of scientific agencies threaten the nation’s ability to cultivate the next generation of innovators in game-changing discoveries. Businesses alone cannot fill this void as their research is narrower in scope and focused on short-term gains. It is imperative that Congress assert its constitutional authority to fully fund basic research, including essential indirect costs ensuring these agencies have the resources and staffing required to fulfill their vital missions! Moreover, Congress must decisively reject the administrations unlawful impoundment of congressionally appropriated funds intended for scientific research across various domains. The nation’s future as an innovation, powerhouse hinges on robust sustained investment in fundamental scientific inquiry. Failing to do so with squander America’s hard earned reputation as a global leader in invention and deprive society of potentially transformative advancements in fields ranging from medicine and technology to energy and national security.
