I ask you to vote NO on the Big Beautiful Bill (BBB).
There are many reasons I oppose the BBB just passed by the House, especially the cuts in funding for the social safety nets and for scientific research that keep our communities healthy and strong. I also oppose the concurrent cuts in taxes for the wealthy, which should be inexplicable to and indefensible for anyone legitimately concerned about the national debt.
But I just found another reason to vote down the BBB: as reported in the Christian Science Monitor (“A hidden provision in Trump’s ‘big bill’ could weaken the judicial branch,” May 28, 2025), there is a clause in the BBB that would shift power from the judiciary to the executive branch. The clause would limit a federal court’s ability to enforce a contempt-of-court citation for failing to comply with an injunction or temporary restraining order. The article quotes a law expert: “What Congress is trying to do here is ease the way for the administration to ignore court orders.”
Reject the Big Beautiful Bill. Fight for funding for social services and science. Fight against tax cuts for our wealthiest citizens. And make sure the budget does not include a provision to give the president the power to ignore the judiciary.
