As a constituent, I am writing to demand that you vote NO on the SAVE Act.
The SAVE Act is straight up voter suppression, we all know that. It would require every voter to present proof of citizenship – a birth certificate or passport. A Real ID, driver license, military ID, or Tribal ID will no longer be sufficient.
Experts estimate more than 140 million Americans lack passports. Forcing them to procure one is a poll tax. And for the tens of millions of American women who married and took their husbands’ names, as I did, their birth certificates no longer match their legal names. The SAVE Act disenfranchises them – and me. How many Texas women have taken their husbands’ names? How many of your female constituents have? Why shouldn’t we be able to vote?
You know as well as I do that voter fraud is vanishingly rare in this country. It is not a problem. This is just another attempt by your party to suppress votes. Stop it. Vote NO on SAVE. We have real problems in this country. Maybe try solving some of them.
