No Human is Illegal — No to SB 58

I am writing with a heartfelt appeal for compassion and justice. As a fellow Missourian, I am deeply troubled by Senate Committee Substitute for Senate Bill No. 58. This bill, especially through Section 44.500—which establishes the “Interstate Compact for Border Security Act”—and Sections 577.690 and 577.695—which criminalize undocumented immigrants by imposing steep fines, orders of removal, and felony classifications—undermines our shared values and human dignity.
Undocumented immigrants are not criminals; they are people who contribute immensely to our state. They are the hands that work our fields, build our homes, and fuel our service industries. These individuals pay federal, state, and local taxes that support our schools, roads, and public services, even though, aside from Medicaid, they rarely benefit from these programs. Studies consistently show that the economic contributions of immigrants strengthen local economies, making Missouri more vibrant and competitive.
By treating undocumented immigrants as threats rather than as human beings striving for a better life, this bill sows seeds of racial discrimination and social division. No one should be defined by their immigration status.
Criminalizing these individuals only deepens the wounds of division and paves the way for further injustice and violence—effects that ultimately hurt all American citizens.
I urge you to oppose this bill and instead support policies that recognize the contributions of all residents, honor our shared humanity, and build a stronger, more unified Missouri.
Thank you for your time and for considering the profound impact your decisions have on our community.
