Restore FBI Counterterrorism Resources & Refocus on Actual Threats*

I am writing to urge you to ensure that FBI counterterrorism and cybersecurity resources dismantled over the last year are rebuilt and properly funded to address the actual threats facing Americans. The Trump administration has been reallocating scarce federal resources away from proven terrorist threats toward drug cartels, the Venezuelan state, and groups like Antifa. While these may present challenges, they do not represent the same level of threat to Americans as actual terrorist organizations. This misallocation of resources risks losing focus on the battle against genuine terrorist networks. The data on domestic terrorism is particularly concerning yet the administration has diverted attention to chase Antifa which is an idea not an organized group. Extremist groups like the Base have openly called for violence in the US. Since the FBI has moved investigators away from monitoring far-right networks, the Base in particular appears to feel free to organize and prepare for their stated objective of fomenting an armed insurgency against the US government. Meanwhile, FBI agents have been reassigned from counterterrorism work to immigration enforcement, where more than 70% the people arrested are not accused of committing any crimes or harming anyone. This represents a fundamental misuse of highly trained counterterrorism professionals. The FBI's counterterrorism and cybersecurity divisions require specialized expertise and sustained focus. Dismantling these resources and redirecting staff has resulted in a loss of institutional knowledge and operational capability that takes years to rebuild. Every agent pulled from monitoring actual terrorist networks or combating cybercrime is an agent who cannot prevent the next attack. I urge you to take immediate action to restore full staffing and funding for FBI counterterrorism and cybersecurity operations. Congress must also conduct oversight to ensure these resources are being deployed against actual criminals and terrorist networks, not misused for political purposes. The safety of your constituents depends on maintaining a clear-eyed focus on real threats, not manufactured ones.
