Defend the First Amendment—Protect the Separation of Church and State

The First Amendment begins with six simple words: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” That promise has protected every American for nearly 250 years—Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, atheists, and everyone else. It is one of the greatest safeguards of liberty ever written. Now that protection is under direct attack by the current Administration. The Administration’s so-called Religious Liberty Commission has released a draft report dismissing the principle of separation of church and state as a “legal error” while urging the federal government to elevate one religious viewpoint above all others. It recommends weakening civil rights protections, promoting religious displays in public schools, and expanding government entanglement with religion. That is not religious liberty. It is government favoritism and a direct violation of the Constitution. History has shown time and again that when government chooses winners and losers in matters of faith, everyone loses—including people of faith. The Establishment Clause exists to protect religion from government just as much as it protects government from religion. I am demanding that Congress defend the Constitution and reject any effort to erode the separation of church and state. Hold oversight hearings. Oppose legislation that advances religious favoritism. Publicly reaffirm that the federal government represents every American—not one church, one denomination, or one belief system. Our nation was founded on freedom of conscience, not government-sponsored religion. The Constitution belongs to all Americans, and no administration has the authority to rewrite its meaning. Protect the First Amendment. Protect religious freedom for everyone. Protect the separation of church and state before irreversible damage is done.
