Dear President Biden,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to you as a concerned citizen deeply invested in the future of democracy, not only in the United States but also globally. Recent developments in Georgia raise significant concerns about the integrity of its democratic processes, particularly surrounding the parliamentary elections held on October 26.
Given the serious questions surrounding the legitimacy of these elections, I urge you to withhold recognition of their results. It is crucial that the United States also refrain from recognizing the newly established parliament and the subsequent formation of a Georgian Dream government, as these actions could undermine the principles of democracy that we strive to uphold.
Moreover, I strongly support President Salome Zourabichvili’s efforts to advocate for new, free, and fair elections under a reformed Central Election Commission. This initiative is essential for fostering democratic renewal in Georgia and ensuring that the voices of the people are heard and respected.
In addition to supporting democratic processes, I call upon the Georgian military and security services to uphold the constitution of Georgia. It is vital that these institutions refuse any orders that contradict the constitutional framework, particularly those aimed at repressing peaceful demonstrators who are exercising their fundamental rights.
Furthermore, I ask that your administration impose immediate and public sanctions on individuals such as Bidzina Ivanishvili, Prime Minister Kobakhidze, and other officials who have engaged in authoritarian practices. These sanctions should extend to police and military officers involved in the crackdown on peaceful protests and in the questionable conduct of the recent parliamentary elections.
I believe that these measures would carry more weight if implemented in coordination with the European Union. Whether taken alone or in collaboration with the EU, these actions would send a clear message: the United States stands firmly with the majority of the Georgian people who seek a democratic, transparent, and accountable government.
Thank you for considering these urgent recommendations. The support of the U.S. for democracy in Georgia is critical at this juncture, and I trust in your commitment to uphold democratic values worldwide.
Sincerely,
