Rein in disastrous overreach of executive trade authority

The precipitous unilateral threat by the president to impose crippling tariffs of up to 50% on all imports from the European Union and consumer technology giants like Apple is an alarming and potentially catastrophic overreach of executive power on trade. This reckless escalation of the administration's economically destructive trade war could severely disrupt global supply chains, dramatically raise costs on American consumers and businesses, invite harsh retaliation decimating U.S. exports, and potentially trigger a worldwide recession - all via one person's personal decree. Congress must intervene immediately to reassert its constitutional authority over tariffs and foreign commerce before such drastic, destabilizing actions plunge the nation and world economy into crisis. The flagrant abuse of unrestrained executive tariff powers to punish allies and companies over legitimate disagreements is an unacceptable usurpation of the legislative branch's power. This usurious economic brinkmanship jeopardizes millions of American jobs and livelihoods hanging in the balance. I urgently call on Congress to rein in this untenable overreach, restore coherence and predictability to trade policy through legislation, and pursue U.S. economic interests through cooperation and enforcement of existing agreements - not destructive threats and protectionism that risk igniting a global trade conflagration.
