An open letter to the U.S. Supreme Court

Uphold Conversion Therapy Bans to Protect LGBTQ+ Youth

22 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear a case challenging Colorado's ban on conversion therapy, I urge you to stand firm in support of these crucial protections for LGBTQ+ youth. The case, set to be heard tomorrow, argues that the ban violates the First Amendment. However, it's critical to recognize that freedom of speech does not extend to practices that cause demonstrable harm to vulnerable individuals, especially minors. Conversion therapy has been widely debunked by medical professionals and mental health experts. It poses significant risks to the mental health and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly young people. The practice is not based on sound scientific evidence and can lead to depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts among those subjected to it. This case comes at a crucial time for LGBTQ+ rights in our country. We've seen recent rulings on gender-affirming care and upcoming cases on transgender participation in sports. It's essential that we continue to move forward in protecting the rights and well-being of all Americans, rather than regressing to harmful practices. Recent political developments underscore the importance of supporting LGBTQ+ rights. In Virginia's governor's race, for example, anti-trans campaigning has proven unpopular. Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears has spent millions on anti-trans ads, yet voters remain focused on issues like the economy, education, and healthcare. This suggests that the public recognizes the need to prioritize substantive policy matters over divisive rhetoric. Furthermore, several states are making progress in easing restrictions for transgender Americans updating official documents. Arizona no longer requires gender-affirming surgery to update birth certificates, and Kansas's Supreme Court has overturned a ban on gender marker changes on driver's licenses. These changes reflect a growing understanding of the needs and rights of transgender individuals. I implore you to use your influence to support the continuation of conversion therapy bans. Protecting our youth from harmful, discredited practices should be a bipartisan issue. By standing against conversion therapy, we affirm the dignity and worth of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Let's ensure that our laws reflect scientific consensus and prioritize the mental health and well-being of our young people.
