An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Restore Congressional Oversight of Intelligence and Military Operations

17 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

The recent suspension of critical intelligence sharing by the United Kingdom with the United States is a stark wake-up call that demands immediate congressional action. This unprecedented move by our closest intelligence partner stems from concerns that the U.S. is misusing shared information for extrajudicial killings in the Caribbean. At least 76 people have been killed since September in military strikes that were previously handled through Coast Guard interdictions and arrests. This alarming development is not isolated. The Netherlands has also begun withholding intelligence due to fears of politicization and misuse. These actions by our allies reflect a broader erosion of trust in the transatlantic security order, exacerbated by incidents such as the temporary suspension of intelligence sharing with Ukraine and questionable alignment with foreign powers. As a concerned constituent, I urge you to take immediate steps to restore congressional oversight and restraint over our military and intelligence services. The United States, once the anchor of the Western intelligence system, is now perceived as unstable and untrustworthy. This perception not only damages our international relationships but also poses a significant threat to our national security and global standing. Congress must assert its constitutional authority to check the power and actions of the current administration. Specifically, I request that you: 1. Initiate hearings to investigate the alleged misuse of intelligence in the Caribbean operations. 2. Propose legislation to strengthen oversight mechanisms for intelligence sharing and military operations. 3. Work across party lines to reaffirm our commitment to international law and ethical intelligence practices. The gravity of this situation cannot be overstated. When long-standing allies treat the U.S. with caution typically reserved for unstable actors, it's time for Congress to act decisively. Our nation's security, credibility, and the stability of the global intelligence community depend on your swift and thorough response. I look forward to seeing concrete actions taken to address these critical issues and restore the United States to its position as a trusted, stable, and lawful leader in the international community.
