I am writing to express my deep concern and opposition regarding the Kennedy amendment that was included in the recent appropriations package passed by Congress. The inclusion of this amendment, which pertains to gun policy, is alarming and poses significant risks to our veterans and their families.
As a constituent, I am horrified by the implications of the Kennedy Amendment. It is distressing to see such critical issues being snuck through in must-pass bills without proper consideration and debate. This particular amendment will exacerbate the already pressing issue of gun violence in our country, particularly among our veteran population.
Are you aware that, on average, 17 veterans tragically take their own lives every day in the United States? Even more concerning is the fact that 75% of these deaths are by firearm. By making it easier for veterans with known mental health conditions to access firearms, the Kennedy Amendment will undoubtedly contribute to this alarming statistic.
It is imperative that Congress takes immediate and decisive action to address the gun violence crisis that plagues our nation. The inclusion of the Kennedy Amendment in the appropriations package is a step in the wrong direction and goes against the urgent need for comprehensive gun safety measures.
I urge you, as my elected representative, to do everything in your power to counteract the harm that the Kennedy amendment will inevitably inflict. Our veterans and their families deserve better, and it is incumbent upon Congress to prioritize their safety and well-being.
Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to your response.
