An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Fully Fund and Staff NASA & Preserve NASA’s Goddard Library!

33 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

I am writing as a constituent and as someone who cares deeply about the United States’ leadership in science, engineering, and space exploration. The planned closure of NASA’s Goddard Library and the potential loss or inaccessibility of thousands of unique scientific documents are profoundly concerning. I urge you to take immediate action to ensure that NASA is fully staffed and funded and that the Goddard Library is preserved, staffed, and accessible to the scientific community. NASA’s work is not only a source of national pride; it is a cornerstone of American innovation. The research conducted across NASA centers fuels advancements in climate science, aerospace engineering, Earth observation, planetary exploration, and countless technologies that ultimately benefit the public and the economy. None of this work is possible without the institutional knowledge, historical data, and technical documentation that NASA’s libraries safeguard. The Goddard Library, in particular, houses decades of irreplaceable materials—research papers, engineering documents, mission archives, and scientific records that cannot simply be recreated or replaced. These materials are essential for ongoing missions, future planning, and the continuity of scientific understanding. Losing access to them, or dispersing them without proper preservation, would undermine the very foundation of NASA’s research capabilities. Cutting library services or reducing archival content and access does not save money in the long term; instead, it slows innovation, increases research redundancy, and jeopardizes mission success. NASA’s budget should reflect the scale of its contributions to the nation. Fully funding the agency including its research infrastructure, libraries, and archival systems is an investment in American leadership, economic growth, national security, and scientific progress. I respectfully ask that you: * Support full and stable funding for NASA in upcoming appropriations. * Advocate for the preservation and continued operation of the Goddard Library and its collections. * Ensure that NASA’s scientific and engineering workforce has the resources, staffing, and archival access required to continue their world‑leading work. Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. I hope you will stand with the scientific community and protect the resources that make NASA’s achievements possible.
