An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Against Tiktok Ban!

5 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

The proposed TikTok ban raises concerning questions about online privacy, data security, and the free exchange of information and ideas in a democratic society. While there are legitimate national security risks regarding user data collection by companies beholden to authoritarian governments, an outright ban sets a troubling precedent of internet censorship. Instead of a sweeping prohibition, we should pursue targeted solutions to protect user data while safeguarding online freedoms. Regulations ensuring data privacy, investment in secure communication technologies, and diplomacy to establish data-sharing standards with foreign entities could achieve our national interests without resorting to censorship. An open internet has been vital for innovation, creativity, and global connectivity - core strengths of our society that should not be undermined. I urge you to carefully consider alternative approaches that uphold both security and freedom of expression on digital platforms.
