An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Reinstate nonpartisan Archivist, uphold democratic processes and accountability

23 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

The National Archives plays a crucial role in safeguarding democratic principles and government accountability. The recent firing of the Archivist of the United States is an alarming development that threatens the integrity of vital processes overseen by the National Archives. This includes administering the Electoral College process, codifying federal regulations, facilitating constitutional amendments, ensuring proper records management across agencies, managing personnel records, overseeing classification procedures, and enforcing the Freedom of Information Act. Removing the nonpartisan Archivist undermines the independence of this office which has remained apolitical for nearly a century. I urge you to reinstate the previous Archivist to uphold the National Archives' essential functions and maintain public trust in these processes fundamental to our democracy.
