Urgently Release SNAP Benefits to Prevent Ohio Food Crisis

The current lapse in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to the federal government shutdown is creating an unprecedented crisis for 1.4 million Ohioans, including 190,000 in Cuyahoga County alone. This man-made disaster is the first time in American history that food benefits have been allowed to lapse during a shutdown, leaving vulnerable families without essential support. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank is struggling to meet the increased demand, having distributed six million pounds of food in just one month—a staggering 22% increase from the previous year. While local governments and the state of Ohio are providing emergency funds, these efforts fall drastically short of the $263 million typically distributed monthly through SNAP in our state. The timing of this crisis is particularly devastating. SNAP benefits are usually distributed across the first 20 days of each month, and many recipients deplete their supply by month's end. Now, as we approach a new month, families are facing empty cupboards with no relief in sight. Despite court orders to release funds, the administration is inexplicably delaying action, citing a need for specific legal guidance. This inaction is unconscionable and is causing real harm to our communities. While local food establishments are generously offering free meals, they cannot replace the federal safety net that SNAP provides. I urge you to take immediate action to pressure the administration to release SNAP funds without further delay. Every day of inaction exacerbates hunger and hardship for thousands of Ohio families. We need our representatives to stand up for the most vulnerable among us and ensure that no one in our state goes hungry due to political maneuvering. The consequences of continued delay are severe, and the time to act is now.
