An open letter to the U.S. Congress

DOGE's Dodgy Numbers

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been criticized for inaccurately reporting budget cuts and concealing these errors, mirroring practices observed at Tesla regarding the transparency of safety data for its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features. Researchers, including Bryant Walker Smith and Noah Goodall, have noted that Tesla's crash statistics often lack crucial context and have been inconsistently reported. For instance, in January 2023, Tesla revised its safety figures, making non-Autopilot crash rates appear higher and Autopilot rates more favorable by comparison. Additionally, Tesla has been less transparent than other companies in reporting crash data to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Critics are calling for greater transparency and data access to properly assess the safety of advanced driver-assistance systems.
