I urge you to oppose any cuts to Medicare. Recent discussions among Senate Republicans have explored the idea of cutting "waste, fraud, and abuse" in Medicare to help offset the significant cost of President Trump's landmark BBB.
The House-passed version of this bill already proposes cutting more than $800 billion from Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Now, some GOP lawmakers, including Senator Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), are advocating for reviewing Medicare for similar "waste" to further reduce the bill's projected cost.
I recognize the critical role Medicare plays. It is the second-largest federal government program, having spent $1 trillion in 2023, and is projected to double to $2 trillion by 2033. In 2023, Medicare accounted for 27 percent of the entire federal budget deficit.
While fiscal responsibility is important, any reductions, even those framed as targeting "waste, fraud, and abuse," could ultimately harm beneficiaries and compromise the integrity of this essential program.
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that the House-passed bill would add $2.4 trillion to the federal debtover the next decade, with proposed tax cuts decreasing revenues by over $3.6 trillion during that timeframe. Instead of looking to cut crucial programs like Medicare, Congress should seek solutions that do not jeopardize the healthcare of our seniors and most vulnerable citizens.
I urge you to stand firm against any proposals that would weaken Medicare. Our focus should be on strengthening, not cutting, the programs that provide essential services to Americans.
