I am writing to express my strong opposition to three harmful pieces of legislation: S. 4136, “The Nonprofit Killer Bill,” S. 4127, misleadingly titled “The Antisemitism Awareness Act,” and H.R. 8282, which seeks to undermine the International Criminal Court (ICC) and international law. These bills threaten the values of justice, equity, and democracy that you are entrusted to uphold.
S. 4136 circumvents due process and the critical checks and balances that underpin our democracy. By granting the executive branch unilateral authority to label nonprofit organizations as “terrorist-supporting” without oversight or statutory discernment, this bill creates a dangerous avenue for abuse. Such power can easily be used as a political tool to silence dissenting voices or opposition to an administration’s policies. This is not only an attack on freedom of speech but also a direct threat to democracy itself. Nonprofits play an essential role in advancing equity, providing vital services, and holding power accountable. This bill jeopardizes all of that.
S. 4127 is equally concerning, as it seeks to codify the controversial International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism. While combating antisemitism is crucial, the IHRA definition is flawed, as it equates legitimate criticism of Israel or Zionism with antisemitism. This false conflation has been rejected by many Jewish organizations and free speech advocates. Adopting such a definition would suppress legitimate political discourse and critical conversations, particularly on college campuses, while detracting from efforts to combat real antisemitism.
H.R. 8282 further isolates the United States by seeking to undermine the ICC, a vital institution for holding perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity accountable. Weakening the ICC sends a troubling message that the U.S. does not prioritize human rights and international justice, eroding our credibility on the global stage.
These bills collectively represent a dangerous encroachment on fundamental freedoms and democratic principles. As your constituent, I urge you to reject these measures and stand firm in defense of freedom of speech, due process, and international justice. Your role as a senator is to act in the best interests of all Americans, ensuring that our policies align with the values of equity, justice, and accountability.
Please vote against these harmful pieces of legislation and reaffirm your commitment to the principles that define our nation.
I look forward to your opposition to all 3 of these harmful pieces of legislation.
