Oppose H.R. 2288 (Common Sense Air Regulations Act)

I am writing to urge you to oppose H.R. 2288, the “Common Sense Air Regulations Act,” introduced on March 24, 2025. This bill would nullify the EPA’s final rule, “Reconsideration of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for Particulate Matter,” published on March 6, 2024, which tightened the primary (health-based) PM₂.₅ standard to 9.0 µg/m—strengthening protections for all Americans against harmful particulate pollution. By invalidating this science-based rulemaking, H.R. 2288 would undermine critical public health safeguards. Particulate matter is linked to higher rates of heart attacks, strokes, aggravated asthma, and premature death—especially among children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses. The EPA’s February 2024 revision was grounded in robust, peer-reviewed science demonstrating that lowering the PM₂.₅ standard prevents thousands of costly health events and saves lives each year. Overturning these standards would reverse decades of progress in reducing pollution and protecting community health. The Clean Air Act mandates periodic, science-driven reviews of air quality standards, relying on independent experts and the best available data. H.R. 2288 short-circuits this carefully calibrated process, substituting political judgment for technical rule-making and setting a dangerous precedent of Congressional interference in EPA’s statutory duties. Such interference would generate regulatory uncertainty, hampering state and local efforts to meet—and enforce—air quality goals. For these reasons, I respectfully ask you to oppose H.R. 2288 in committee, speak out against any effort to weaken PM₂.₅ protections, and vote “No” should the bill reach the House floor.
