An open letter to the U.S. Congress

End Public Prison Profiteering as well.

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

End corporate profiteering off of public prisons. Ending private prisons is not enough. They are not the only ones making money off of human suffering. From the phone providers extorting the families of inmates when they want to contact their loved ones, renting prisoners access to the means of improving themselves and communicating. We then steal the inmates labor. The families end up paying for their basic needs at extortionary prices. Thid is cruel and counter productive. Like everything else in our criminal justice system they are deeply influenced by racism and profit. Isolating prisoners from their communities and loved ones increases recidivism. Our system disproportionately targets low income and BIPOC people. We criminalize poverty and then steal their labor and community wealth ensuring an every growing pool of the exploited and abused. Our system was designed this way and it must end. Slavery was never abolished in the United States it was only nationalized. Now there is a move to deny prisoners physical mail so the companies renting tablets to prisoners, people a starvation income at best, will be able to extort their families for more money of they want to communicate. Every day this system of cruelty continues is your responsibility. Every day that it has existed under your term is as well. Put an end to this cruelty.
