I am a constituent writing with concern about continued erosion of voter access, unequal election standards across states, and declining public confidence in the integrity of federal elections. These conditions directly affect citizens’ constitutional right to participate equally in our democracy and require congressional action.
In 2021, comprehensive democracy reform legislation known as the For the People Act (H.R.1 / S.1) passed the House of Representatives but failed to advance in the Senate. Since then, federal election standards have remained fragmented, leaving voters subject to widely varying rules depending on where they live. At the same time, persistent challenges to election legitimacy and the absence of clear national safeguards continue to increase the risk of voter intimidation, confusion, and disengagement. This is unfinished congressional business with ongoing consequences.
Congress has clear authority under Article I, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution to regulate federal elections. Federal law further protects voters against intimidation and guarantees equal protection and due process, while the First Amendment safeguards political participation. Reintroducing and advancing comprehensive federal election standards is both constitutionally grounded and necessary to meet these responsibilities.
I am asking you to take the following actions:
• Publicly state, on the record, your support for comprehensive democracy reform • Support and advance the reintroduction of legislation modeled on the For the People Act • Take a concrete procedural step, such as introducing or co-sponsoring the bill and working through committee and leadership channels to bring it forward for debate and vote
Failure to act allows preventable harm to persist. Continued erosion of voter confidence and unequal access to the ballot is foreseeable, and Congress will share responsibility if it does not take decisive steps to address it.
