Trump’s HUD Shields Racism—Stand for Fair Housing in Texas
13 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!
I’m writing to express outrage over recent actions by the Trump administration’s Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which deliberately overruled career investigators and closed two critical housing discrimination cases in Texas. These cases, one in Dallas and another in Houston involved Black residents who alleged they were repeatedly denied housing because of their race. HUD investigators found clear evidence of discrimination. Yet, under the direction of Trump-appointed officials, the department dismissed both cases before victims could get justice (ProPublica, March 27, 2025).
This isn’t a misunderstanding—it’s part of a pattern. During Trump’s first term, his administration routinely undermined civil rights enforcement across multiple agencies, including HUD. Now, with loyalists back in power, we’re seeing the same agenda revived: protecting landlords and developers over the rights of vulnerable Americans. These two cases in Texas are a warning sign. When our government refuses to enforce fair housing laws, it sends a dangerous message: that racism in housing will be tolerated and civil rights are optional.
I don’t have faith that our Republican representatives in the Federal government will do anything about this. But to every state and local official receiving this letter: please, do something. Speak out. Launch investigations. Introduce resolutions. Demand accountability. We live in a country that is supposed to value equality under the law. This is not just immoral—it is un-American. You took an oath to serve all your constituents. That includes those being shut out, ignored, and discriminated against by their government.
