I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the disproportionate impact of recent federal workforce reductions on our nation’s veterans. The Trump administration’s drastic cuts to government agencies have unfairly targeted those who have dedicated their lives to serving our country—both in uniform and as civilian employees.
Veterans make up 28% of the federal workforce, a far greater share than the 5% in the private sector. Many of these individuals see public service as a continuation of their mission to serve, and over 200,000 of them are disabled or managing serious health conditions. The mass terminations within federal agencies represent the largest attack on veteran employment in our lifetime, as noted by the Union Veterans Council.
One veteran working at the Department of Defense recently shared that he and his colleagues are being unfairly smeared as leeches, despite their commitment to their jobs and families. It is unacceptable that those who fought for our country are now being discarded by the very government they risked their lives to protect.
I urge you to take action by:
1. Demanding transparency regarding the number of veterans affected by these job cuts.
2. Advocating for protections to prevent disabled and service-connected veterans from being disproportionately fired.
3. Pushing for policies that prioritize the hiring and retention of veterans within federal agencies.
4. Holding the administration accountable for ensuring that veterans receive fair treatment and do not bear the brunt of politically motivated job cuts.
Veterans have already sacrificed so much. It is unacceptable for them to be cast aside under the guise of government downsizing. As a taxpayer and constituent, I expect you to stand up for those who have defended our freedoms. I look forward to your response on what you are doing to address this urgent issue.
