Please Sustain Governor Kelly’s Vetoes of HB 2437, HB 2569, and HB 2587

I am writing to urge you to sustain Governor Kelly’s vetoes of HB 2437, HB 2569, and HB 2587. These bills would create unnecessary barriers to voting, limit access to the ballot, and undermine confidence in our election system. HB 2437 would require county election offices to reject certain voter registration forms—including some they are required to accept under federal law—without notifying the voter. This risks disenfranchising eligible voters who may never know their registration was denied. HB 2569 would restrict Kansans’ ability to challenge election laws locally by forcing cases into Shawnee County, while also jeopardizing mail voting for thousands if courts find due process violations. This limits access to justice and could silence voters. HB 2587 would impose stricter requirements on state IDs than federal REAL ID standards by requiring proof of citizenship, without a clear implementation plan or cost analysis. This could create confusion, burden taxpayers, and put lawful residents at risk when presenting identification. Kansas has a strong tradition of fair and accessible elections. These bills move us in the wrong direction by creating barriers rather than ensuring participation. I respectfully ask that you vote to sustain these vetoes and protect the rights of Kansans to participate fully and fairly in our democracy.
