Greetings. I am a voting constituent in rural west Texas.
Irony is alive and well. As we prepare to celebrate America’s independence, Freedom achieved, we have also watched our citizens liberties taken away at the same time.
I predict a resurgence of the old sign once prominently posted everywhere….”We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.”
Covers all bases nicely doesn’t it?
SCOTUS has once again taken our society backwards in time. They’re asking us to revisit and relive our past history. Taking away protections hard earned. Taken away structures put in place to truly try to achieve the equality promised by our Founders.
Taken away a woman’s bodily autonomy on the most personal level.
Taken away the LGBTQ community’s right to not be discriminated against.
Taken away higher education’s ability to make the leaders of tomorrow look like America. A high-minded disregard of how hard it is for segments of our society to actually pull themselves up by their bootstraps without a level playing field is elitism in action.
And finally, destroying the hopes of a whole generation for relief from student debt made crushing by the pandemic.
The hypocrisy of this last decision can’t be lost on many members of Congress.
“Today, the court substituted itself for Congress,” [Education Secretary Miguel] Cardona told reporters. “It’s outrageous to me that Republicans in Congress and state offices fought so hard against a program that would have helped millions of their own constituents. They had no problem handing trillion-dollar tax cuts to big corporations and the super wealthy.”
“And many had no problems accepting millions of dollars in forgiven pandemic loans, like Senator Markwayne Mullin from Oklahoma had more than $1.4 million in pandemic loans forgiven. He represents 489,000 eligible borrowers that were turned down today. Representative Brett Guthrie from Kentucky had more than $4.4 million forgiven. He represents more than 90,000 eligible borrowers who were turned down today. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia had more than $180,000 forgiven. She represents more than 91,800 eligible borrowers who were turned down today.”
So now women, students of all colors, past and present, LGBTQ, and everyone who supports these groups, are all looking at the GOP. And not in a good way.
Is your plan to save America by destroying your party?
Happy Fourth to us all. God save America.
