Addressing the Crisis of High Medication Costs in America

As a concerned constituent, I am writing to express my frustration regarding the exorbitant prices Americans pay for medication and to advocate for the implementation of Universal Healthcare as a viable solution. Recent studies, including one by the Commonwealth Fund, highlight a stark disparity: Americans pay, on average, three times more for the top 10 prescription drugs compared to other high-income countries. Even after accounting for discounts and rebates, U.S. prices remain significantly higher. This is not just an economic issue; it's a matter of life and quality of life for many. The argument often presented by pharmaceutical companies that high U.S. prices are necessary to fund research is misleading. Much of the groundwork for drug development is supported by federal research, effectively underwritten by our taxes. It is unjust that Americans subsidize research only to face inflated prices for the resulting medications. The case of inhaler prices further exemplifies this issue. As reported by The Hill, inhalers that cost hundreds of dollars in the U.S. are sold for a fraction of the price overseas. For instance, an AstraZeneca inhaler costs $645 in the U.S. but just $49 in the U.K. This discrepancy is not only unfair but also unsustainable for many Americans. Universal Healthcare, as practiced in countries like Switzerland and the U.K., offers a more equitable model. It enables the negotiation of fair drug prices, benefiting the general populace rather than padding the profits of pharmaceutical companies. In a true capitalist market, buyers and sellers negotiate fair prices. Unfortunately, in the current U.S. healthcare system, consumers are often left with no choice but to accept the prices set by pharmaceutical companies. I urge you to support and advocate for Universal Healthcare, as proposed in bills like HR 3421. It is time our healthcare system prioritizes the well-being of its citizens over the interests of pharmaceutical and insurance companies. You represent us, your constituents, and we need you to act in our best interest. Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. I trust you will consider the pressing need for Universal Healthcare and take action to make healthcare more affordable for all Americans.
