I believe in civic engagement. If we the people don’t care enough to participate in the struggle to maintain our fragile democracy, then we don’t deserve it. So I write letters. I donate where and when I can. I remain woke in the best sense of the word.
But watching my elected officials, indeed half of the Congress, relinquish their own engagement in our society, except in ways I believe to be counterproductive and even cruel, I wonder why I even bother to care. I do what I can. But I watch those given the power by their election to lead us, choose not to. And instead acquiesce to the worst tendencies shown by a president in all our lifetimes.
He has given us an inexperienced and incompetent administration. Loaded with loyalists. Whose on the job training has been disasterous and even dangerous.
He has given an erratic odd billionaire cloaked in the guise of savant a wrecking ball to use against the government and the people who make the country run. And now we’re not even privy to the reality of whether actual savings were made or, more likely, how much the efforts of efficiency are actually costing us.
He is slowly steadily chipping away at our civil rights. Abusing the legal system by his weaponization of the DOJ. Ignoring the courts.
We are perceived as cruel. Untrustworthy. Even dangerous to the world. Our word is becoming worthless.
We are turning our back on the ideals that make America, America. We are becoming an embarrassment, led by a man that is making us a laughingstock by his actions. Every day in every way he diminishes us.
So that’s it for me today. I will continue to try to do my civic duty. I just wish more of you would do the same.
Because it really does matter.
