I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge you to oppose H.R. 7661, the so-called “Stop the Sexualization of Children Act.” While its title suggests a protective aim, the bill would in practice give politicians broad authority to decide which stories, voices, and ideas are allowed in our schools and libraries.
Parents—not politicians—should guide their children’s reading. Professional librarians and educators are trained to select age-appropriate, evidence-based materials that reflect the diversity and educational needs of their communities. Their work helps young people develop critical thinking skills, empathy, and a lifelong love of reading.
H.R. 7661 threatens that mission by imposing vague and ideological restrictions that could silence marginalized voices and undermine local decision-making. It also risks chilling the work of librarians and teachers who are already navigating complex community needs with care and professionalism.
Rather than targeting educators and librarians, Congress should invest in them. The Right to Read Act offers a better path—supporting well-staffed, well-resourced school libraries and protecting every child’s freedom to explore literature and ideas safely.
I ask you to publicly oppose H.R. 7661 and instead champion policies that support literacy, intellectual freedom, and the ability of families and educators to make thoughtful choices for their children.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue and for your continued commitment to protecting the freedom to read.
