Drop the SAVE Act Budget Gambit and Stop Targeting Eligible American Voters

I am writing to urge you to forcefully reject any attempt to pass the SAVE America Act, whether as standalone legislation or backdoored into budget reconciliation through H. Con. Res. 113. The Senate has already made it clear that sweeping voting restrictions lack the support to become law on their own merits. Trying to slide a non-starter policy rider into a must-pass spending bill is a procedural trick that wastes taxpayer time, delays critical legislation, and bypasses meaningful debate. Beyond the political gamesmanship, this policy is disastrous for real voters. Requiring strict, in-person documentary proof of citizenship to register or update voter information upends online and mail-in registration, forcing everyday Americans into long lines at local election offices. The impact won't hit "loopholes." It will hit your constituents: - Married Women: An estimated 69 million American women do not have a birth certificate that matches their current legal name because they took a spouse's name at marriage. The bill directs states to set up a process for resolving these name discrepancies, but it pairs that process with a federal crime for any election official who registers someone whose documents don't match. Facing that criminal exposure, officials have every incentive to reject a mismatched application rather than take the risk, and it is your constituents who would pay the price in delays and denials. - Rural & Older Voters: Only about 1 in 4 Americans with a high school degree or less, and roughly 1 in 5 earning under $50,000, hold a valid U.S. passport. Millions of rural Americans and seniors live far from county election offices without reliable transportation. Replacing a lost or non-matching birth certificate costs time and money that working families shouldn't have to spend. - Election Workers: The bill imposes severe criminal penalties on local officials for processing errors, threatening to paralyze the exact people who keep our elections running. Noncitizen voting is already illegal, exceedingly rare, and carries severe penalties under current law. We do not need a massive, unfunded federal mandate that disenfranchises eligible citizens to solve a non-existent problem. Please stand up for your voters, respect the legislative process, and vote NO on inserting the SAVE Act into budget packages.
