I am writing to you as your constituent to express deep concern over recent reports indicating that President Donald Trump is about to accept a gift from the Qatari government of a private plane worth an estimated $400 million to be used as Air Force One. But at the conclusion of his term, will be transferred to his own presidential library, allowing his own personal use.
These developments raise serious constitutional and ethical questions. The Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution (Article I, Section 9, Clause 8) clearly states that no person holding public office may accept any present or “emolument” from a foreign state without the consent of Congress. A $400 million private jet from a foreign monarchy warrants immediate scrutiny.
Regardless of party or political affiliation, Americans deserve to know that our public institutions are not being used for private or foreign enrichment. Transparency and accountability are cornerstones of a functioning democracy. When questions of foreign gifts, influence, or potential self-dealing arise, they must be investigated – fully, impartially, and without delay.
I respectfully urge you to publicly call on the Department of Justice to appoint a Special Counsel to investigate whether these actions violate federal law or constitutional restrictions. A Special Counsel would help ensure a fair, independent review free from political bias.
Our nation’s credibility and the integrity of our democratic institutions depend on applying the law equally to all. Please do everything in your power to support a full investigation into these matters.
