Reverse Reckless Public Safety Grants Cuts, Restore Funding

14 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

The Justice Department's abrupt cuts to hundreds of public safety grants worth $500 million are jeopardizing vital initiatives across the country. These federally funded programs supported law enforcement efforts against violent crime and drug trafficking, as well as community-based violence intervention and prevention work. The cuts undermine bipartisan legislation like the 2022 Safer Communities Act which dedicated funding for proven strategies to reduce gun violence. This rash decision lacks transparency and appears ideologically motivated rather than grounded in evidence of program effectiveness or fiscal responsibility. Terminating grants midstream could lead to layoffs of critical personnel and curtail services that keep communities safe. A reasoned review process engaging law enforcement, violence prevention experts, and rigorous research should guide any funding reallocations to ensure public safety remains the top priority.
