Urge Congress to Shut Down Section 215 of the Patriot Act

I am writing to urge you to oppose the reauthorization of Section 215 of the Patriot Act and work to shut down this surveillance provision permanently. Section 215 allows the government to collect vast amounts of personal information without a warrant or any suspicion of criminal activity, a power that has proven both ineffective and dangerous. Despite being passed in the aftermath of September 11th and justified as a counterterrorism tool, Section 215 has never been shown to prevent a single terrorist attack. What it has enabled, as Edward Snowden's revelations exposed, is mass surveillance of essentially all Americans through the collection of phone call metadata showing who people contacted and when. This dragnet approach violates the privacy of millions of law-abiding citizens without delivering the security benefits promised. The harm extends far beyond privacy concerns. Section 215 surveillance is not applied equally across communities. People of color, immigrants, and Muslims face disproportionate targeting under this provision. The FBI's designation of "Black Identity Extremists" as domestic terrorists has been used to justify surveillance of Black Lives Matter activists. People who communicate with family and friends overseas are particularly exposed, contributing to the oppression experienced by immigrant and Muslim communities. Allowing Section 215 to continue gives any administration, including the current one, unchecked authority to conduct intrusive and discriminatory spying on Americans. This is not a theoretical concern but a documented pattern of abuse that undermines civil liberties and targets vulnerable communities. I ask that you publicly oppose Section 215 reauthorization and support legislation to permanently end this surveillance authority. Our security does not require sacrificing constitutional protections or enabling discriminatory government overreach. Congress has an opportunity to correct this mistake and protect the privacy and civil rights of all Americans.
